Getting around

The Maria Ygnacio detour: plan before you pedal.

The City’s October notice reports construction at the U.S. 101 undercrossing between Calle Real and Lassen Drive. Completion is expected in mid-November, weather permitting. The notice names detours via University Drive, Patterson Avenue and Hollister Avenue, or Calle Real and Turnpike Road. Follow current signs and consult the County’s project updates before leaving.

Our take

Useful local coverage starts with everyday friction. A route change deserves as much attention as a grand opening when it affects the trip you make every day.

Places · Goleta Beach

The Ellwood: put the shoreline on the itinerary.

The Ellwood lists its address as 5905 Sandspit Road at Goleta Beach. Its website provides menus, reservations and event information. Use those live pages to check the current service schedule before making a trip. This is a researched place profile, not a dining review.

Our take

A useful beach guide should make the day easier to plan. Knowing where you can stop for a meal matters; claims about the food or service should wait for a documented visit.

Places · Local history

An ordinary Sunday at Rancho La Patera.

The Goleta Valley Historical Society lists Sundays at the Ranch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with free admission, animals and tractor rides. It also lists Stow House tours on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 and 3 p.m. Check the Society’s current calendar for exceptions and tour details before going.

Our take

Local discovery doesn’t have to mean chasing the newest opening. Familiar places become more useful when we explain how to enjoy them again—especially for people who have just moved here.
